While you are going through your clutter it is sometimes hard to decide what you should store, trash, or donate. We found lots of great tips from Good Housekeeping to help us decide. Here are some tips we think are helpful:

• Save plastic take-out food containers so that you can use them to store small items like craft supplies.
• If you have not worn a piece of clothing for the last 18 months it’s a sure sign that you can get rid of it. Donate clean clothing, handbags or shoes at a local Good Will or Salvation Army.
• While going through your clothes be sure to save any “classic” clothing that will never go out of style. Things like dark denim jeans or a tailored white button-down shirt will stand the test of fashion time.
• Have a sock or two without a match? Don’t trash them, re-purpose them. They are great to use for cleaning furniture or as a shoe-buffing mitt.
• Going through the fridge and freezer can be a chore in itself. Most of us know to toss anything that has passed it “best by” date, but if you cannot find one and are unsure how long you have had an item it’s best to get rid of it. Anything that has been in the freezer for longer than 2-3 months should be tossed as well.

Shady Shoes. Shoes may not sound like a very interesting thing to find in a storage unit, but a man was served a search warrant due to the massive amount of shoes at his residence. There were so many the police thought there was something shady happening. In all actuality he was a collector, and even his storage unit was stacked floor-to-ceiling with high-heeled ladies’ shoes.

NASA Equipment. An auction hunter near Cape Canaveral discovered some of NASA’s old equipment. There was a rocket and NASA countdown clock that had been stored after the program they were part of was discontinued.

King Kong. The auction hunters on Storage Wars have uncovered their fair share of wacky items including a piggy bank in the shape of a gorilla eating a banana.
